1960: The Birth of Mulindi Factory Company

In 1960, Mulindi Factory Company was born, embarking on a journey to become the pioneer of tea production in Gicumbi District, Rwanda. With a vision to cultivate the rich tea heritage of the region, MFC set the foundation for a legacy that would endure for generations to come.

1994 – 1996: Post-War Rehabilitation and Renewed Growth

The Rwandan Civil War in the early 1990s brought significant challenges to the tea industry, including the Mulindi Factory. However, from 1994 to 1996, the spirit of rehabilitation and resilience revitalized the factory and its tea plantations. With the community’s support and hard work, operations were restored, and productivity soared to new heights.

2003 – 2011: A Privatization Endeavor and Industry Expansion

In the early 2000s, the Rwandan Government embarked on an ambitious agenda to revitalize and expand the tea industry. As part of this initiative, from 2003 to 2011, Mulindi Factory underwent a privatization endeavor. This move aimed to inject fresh ideas, investments, and expertise into the company, fostering a climate of growth and innovation.

2012: The Dawn of New Ownership

In 2012, a significant change in ownership structure took place. The Rwandan Government granted the majority of shares to Wood Foundation Trust, a philanthropic organization committed to community development and social empowerment. Simultaneously, 5,000 farmers retained ownership through Mulindi Tea Company (MTC), solidifying the bond between the factory and the community it served.

2022: An Unprecedented Milestone

March 2022 will forever be etched in the annals of Mulindi Factory’s history. It marked an unprecedented milestone as Wood Foundation Trust transferred their shares to the small-scale farmers. This momentous event granted the farmers 100% ownership of the factory, making them the sole custodians of their destinies and the factory’s future.
